FOTA – a setback for FIA???
With the budgets of the Formula One soaring high up to £250m per annum, Max Mosley, president of the FIA, came up with a new but controversial amendment stating a voluntary £40m budget cap with greater freedom in the technical aspect for those teams that obliged to the new restriction, creating a two-tier championship.
Most of the Big daddies of F1 like Ferrari, McLaren, Renault, Toyota, BMW Sauber, Brawn GP, Red Bull and Toro Rosso stood against this new proposal and came up with The Formula One Teams Association (FOTA), last September. Force India and Williams were chucked out of FOTA as they obliged to the FIA’s conditions. In the meantime the eight FOTA teams have declared that they would form a separate championship. With the fact that establishing a rival championship against the existing one is surely going to be very difficult, the FOTA looks forward to stand out until Mosley makes proper negotiations. With big names such as Ferrari on the list FOTA does have many positive aspects brighter than the FIA which now has opted to go on with small teams like Force India and Williams. While gaining a license by meeting the safety standards of the FIA is going to be tedious, it becomes clear that just like any other sport Formula One is also going to face hard times of losses and downs if this partition continues, for break ups in such kinds of well established sports federations tend to give rise to more headaches if they don’t sort out the problems as soon as possible.
